Lawmakers consider new way to deal with mascots

March 22, 2007 By WRN Contributor

There's a bipartisan effort in the Legislature to address the controversy over Indian mascots in public schools. A bill is being introduced to set up complaint procedure for mascots, logos, or nicknames that may be deemed "offensive."

State Representative Terry Musser (R-Black River Falls) is a sponsor of the measure. He says the final decision on getting rid of a mascot would be left up to the Department of Public Instruction. That could prevent the often controversial issue from causing problems on the local level.

State Senator Spencer Coggs (D-Milwaukee) is a co-sponsor of the measure. [WIBA's John Colbert contributed this report]
