Marquette wins Big East Tournament opener

March 8, 2007 By WRN Contributor

The Marquette Golden Eagles won their Big East Conference tournament opener, getting by St. John's 76-67 on Wednesday night in New York.  The Golden Eagles reward is a rematch against Pittsburgh, after beating the Panthers last Saturday night.

Dan Fitzgerald scored a collegiate-high 20 points and hit 4 of his 8 three pointers as Marquette improved to 24-8 on the season.  It's the first conference tournament win for the Golden Eagles since the 2001-02' season.

Sophomore guard Wesley Matthews added 15 points and freshman forward Lazar Hayward 14 points for the Golden Eagles.
