New warnings about kids and booze; a report from the Surgeon General finds 11 million underage drinkers in the U.S., even as tobacco and drug use declines. The report calls for changes in culture and attitides about alcohol. Madison alcohol counselor Janet Duberry agrees with much of that. "It seems like the alcohol use is really excessive at this time," she says. "We kind of concentrate on the alcohol beacause we see that as such a dangerous drug, but we don't see, in terms of what the students report, any decline their use of other drugs." Duberry says there's "culture of drinking" in Wisconsin, with an estimated 80 percent of the state's population using alcohol. "I think all we can do is to continue to educate people in terms of safety," she says. "I don't think it's winnable in terms of students or young people not drinking." It's estimated there are 11 million underage drinkers in the U.S. [thanks to John Colbert, WIBA]
