Plan could lower cable costs for consumers

March 9, 2007 By WRN Contributor

State lawmakers are introducing a bill that could lower the prices consumers pay for cable TV. The Video Competition Act would simplify how new franchise agreements are granted to providers, cutting down a process that can currently take years. State Representative Phil Montgomery (R-Ashwaubenon) is a sponsor of the bill. He says the legislation would streamline the process, while still protecting the rights of local governments in the approval process.

Montgomery says the current system for issuing video franchise agreements is nearly 30 years old. He says technology has changed, and the laws need to be reformed in order to adapt. The bill would make it easier for providers such as telephone companies to make video available. Montgomery says it could lead to lower prices and a larger selection for consumers.

The legislation is expected to get a public hearing later this month.
