Regulating traveling sales crews

March 8, 2007 By WRN Contributor

A third legislative attempt will be made to regulate traveling door-to-door sales teams working in the state.

Eight years after seven young people on a magazine sales team died in a traffic crash near Janesville, Senator Jon Erpenbach is trying a third time to make traveling sales companies accountable.

Erpenbach says the companies he has in mind recruit young teens off the street or campuses, drive them all over the country, barely let them sleep or talk to their families and just sell, sell, sell. Maybe they'll get paid.

The Middleton Democrat says there have been cases where workers have been assaulted by crew chiefs for various reasons, not selling enough or wanting to leave the team. He says there have also been reports of sales people attacking potential customers in their homes.

Erpenbach feels if companies were held more accountable for what happens to its workers and were required to follow all state and local laws; it would cut down on the abuse.
