UW-Green Bay women open Horizon League Tournament

March 7, 2007 By WRN Contributor

The UW-Green Bay Phoenix women's basketball team takes a 22-game win streak, the 2nd longest in the nation into the Horizon League Tournament quarterfinals tonight.  The 22nd ranked Phoenix will host Detroit at the Phoenix Sports Center.

Green Bay (25-3) ran through the Horizon League regular season a perfect 16-0, including a pair of wins against Detroit.  But the pressure is on the Phoenix, who despite their fabulous record, might have to win the league title to get the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.  Green Bay may not be able to count on an at-large bid into the tournament field if they don't win the Horizon League post season tournament.

The problem Green Bay experiences is the relative weak conference they play in.  The Horizon League ranks 26th out of 31 converences in RPI.  The Phoenix tops the Horizon League in RPI ranking at #53, and they're 212th out of 335 teams in Division I in strength of schedule.

If Green Bay beats Detroit, which has dropped 13 of their last 14, they will host the remainder of Horizon League Tournament this weekend.
