Badgers' Newkirk to have surgery

April 17, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Mike Newkirk The Wisconsin Badgers will play Saturday's spring scrimmage without junior defensive tackle Mike Newkirk.

Badgers coach Brett Bielema didn't reveal the type of injury Newkirk suffered last weekend, but said he would likely miss about six weeks after undergoing minor surgery.

Newkirk was battling for one of two starting defensive tackle spots on the Badger defensive line with senior Nick Hayden and junior Jason Chapman.  That battle will likely continue in the fall.
