Doyle says an innocent woman is free

April 5, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Governor Jim Doyle says the appeals court has corrected a terrible injustice in freeing former state employee Georgia Thompson . Speaking with reporters Thursday evening, Doyle said nothing can restore the life Thompson once had…but he hopes the decision to overturn her conviction and the order to acquit her will bring some comfort.

Thompson was convicted last fall on charges that she steered a state travel contract to Adelman Travel , a Doyle campaign donor. Doyle says the appeals court clearly recognized Thompson was just doing her job. He pointed to the fact that no evidence was ever presented that Thompson new about donations from Adelman to his campaign fund.

The Governor has always maintained that he's never even met Thompson , but now says he's looking forward to meeting her. Doyle also believes Thompson deserves her job back in the Department of Administration. If she returns, Thompson could also be entitled to having the state cover her legal bills.
