Future of tobacco tax hike unknown

April 27, 2007 By WRN Contributor

State lawmakers have started working on the governor's $58 billion budget, but action on a proposed $1.25 a pack increase in the cigarette tax is not expected to come for some time.

Finance Committee co-chair Russ Decker (D-Wausau) still isn't saying if he'll vote for the proposal. He says it remains to be seen how the increase would work through the system. The Wausau Democrat says a lot of people are currently supporting the hike.

Republicans on the finance committee are already indicating they'll vote against all of the tax increases included in the governor's budget.
