It's peak wildfire season in Wisconsin

April 23, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Warm, dry weather is causing wildfire concerns for at least thirty counties in the state.

It was a busy weekend for wildfires. In the northeast, the DNR's Curt Wilson says there were fifteen fires. The largest was sixty acres fed by dried out Jack Pine. It threatened two structures but they were saved. Wilson says there were other fires near Merrill and Black River Falls.

The warm, windy weather prompted the DNR to cancel permits in 30 counties. But Wilson says it's not unusual this time of year. Peak wildfire season is April and May when the snow melts and the trees start greening.

Wilson says burning permits won't be issued in his northeast region until there's measurable rainfall. As for other parts of the state, check with your local fire or DNR authorities.
