Prospects for high speed rail

April 9, 2007 By WRN Contributor

It won't be as fast as in France, but Wisconsin could soon have high speed passenger rail. France's TGV hit a record breaking 357 miles an hour last week. John Parkyn with the Wisconsin Association of Railroad Passengers says we're not looking to go quite that fast here, more like 110 mph. Before any trains go that fast, there need to be track upgrades, and the trains themselves need to be built. And that means things will have to happen in Washington and Madison. If everything falls into place, Parkyn says 110 mile an hour service linking the Twin Cities, Madison, Milwaukee and Chicago could become a reality in another four to five years. He says projections show the Madison to Chicago link alone could attract up to half a million passengers annually.
