Proposed legislation could increase parent involvement in their kids education. Representative Spencer Black wants parents to be able to use leave to attend parent teacher conferences or other school activities that cannot be scheduled in non-work hours. Black says this can be a real issue for workers in service industries. The bill, from Black and state Senator Tim Carpenter, would allow parents to take up to 16 hours of leave each year for their kids' school activities. Black points out that parental involvement is the number one factor in determining whether kids do well in school, and often it's kids from low income households who need that kind of support.
