"Braille bill" reintroduced

May 8, 2007 By WRN Contributor

An effort to help Wisconsin's blind and visually impaired college students. It's the so-called "Braille bill," which would create a state repository of Braille and large format textbooks. Rhonda Staats is with the Wisconsin Council of the Blind and Visually Impaired. "I was a graduate student about ten years ago, and I understand the reason for having a bill that would have instructional materials available to us readily and on time," Staats said Tuesday. That doesn't always happen now. Wilson Miller of Portage explained the frustrations he dealt with in one course at Madison Area Technical College: he didn't get the required texts in a large print format until five weeks before the end of the semester. The legislation has been reintroduced by state Representative Donna Seidel of Wausau.
