EC scheduled for senate debate

May 16, 2007 By WRN Contributor

The state Senate takes up the so-called Compassionate Care for Rape Victims legislation. Victims of rape should not be re-victimized, so says Senate Majority leader Judy Robson (D-Beloit). Her bill (SB-129), which would require hospitals to tell rape victims about emergency contraceptives and make the morning after pill available to them, is scheduled to get a vote on the Senate floor today (Wednesday).

Robson says former opponents, including the Hospital Associations, the Wisconsin Catholic Conference, and Wisconsin Right to Life, aren't actively opposing the bill anymore. She notes one of every five women has been sexually assaulted. Robson says the emergency contraceptive would prevent a pregnancy, but Pro-Life Wisconsin opposes the bill, saying the morning-after pill is an abortion-causing drug.
