Milwaukee Alderman faces federal charges

May 29, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Milwaukee Alderman Michael McGee was charged in federal court Tuesday with extortion and bribery. US Attorney Steve Biskupic says McGee used his clout to get at least $5,000 in bribes from businesses in his district, in exchange for licensing considerations. Biskupic says the investigation started over a year ago when business owners began making complaints to the FBI about McGee's actions.

Biskupic says the charges are the result of an extensive investigation. The FBI investigation included interviews with multiple store owners undercover activity, and electronic monitoring.

McGee represents Milwaukee's inner city, and was arrested two other times in the last 18 months. He just survived a recall election last month. He's being held on a quarter-million-dollar cash bond.
