Legislation expands no call list to cell phones

June 28, 2007 By WRN Contributor

A state lawmaker wants to expand Wisconsin's no-call list. The proposal from State Representative Ann Hraychuck (D-Balsam Lake) would add cell phones and fax machines to the state's "do not call" list for telemarketers. She says it's an issue of basic privacy, and people shouldn't have to be worried about being bothered by sales calls while they're on the move.

Residential phone lines are currently the only numbers telemarketers can't call. However, Hraychuck says a growing number of Wisconsinites have only a cell phone. She says that shouldn't be an excuse for telemarketers to target them on numbers that can't currently be registered. Hraychuck says the bill will close a loophole, before telemarketers really start to abuse it.

Similar legislation was introduced in the Senate earlier this year.
