Legislation helps Wisconsin brewpubs expand

June 22, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Wisconsin brewpubs could soon be able add additional locations.

Current state law limits Wisconsin breweries that only sell their products on site to only two such locations, but State Representative Spencer Black (D-Madison) says that policy is out of date and was written in a post prohibition period. He says the current law was meant to keep large breweries from taking over taverns in the state, when it's currently holding back small breweries who want to sell their products in their own businesses.

Black plans to introduce legislation that would lift the cap for small brewpubs that sell less than 10,000 barrels of beer each year. He says Wisconsin has small breweries around the state, but tough restrictions prevent many from selling their products.

The proposal was inspired in part by Madison's Great Dane  pub and brewery, which recently opened its third location in Black's district. The Madison Democrat says the current law prevents the business from offering a product it only sells in its restaurants at that third location.
