Wisconsin Emergency Management officials say a proposal requiring schools to conduct tornado drills is a smart move.
The agency's Lori Getter admits many schools already conduct tornado drills, just because of the nature of severe weather in Wisconsin. However, Getter says proposed legislation requiring schools to conduct two tornado or emergency situation drills each year makes sure that message gets across.
Getter says it's a common sense proposal and WEM doesn't believe it will be a hardship for any school district. The state already requires schools to conduct fire drills each year. Getter says requiring tornado drills as well just adds an extra message of safety for children to bring home.
The legislation gets a Capitol hearing later this week.
