More homeowners may qualify for the Homestead Tax Credit under a proposal now in the legislature.
Homeowners are routinely assessed extra fees for things like sidewalks, streets and sewer systems. Kaukauna Representative Tom Nelson says that can add up. Maybe 8 to 900 dollars a year and that makes it tough for people on fixed incomes.
So, Nelson wants to allow those people to deduct special assessments from their income when deciding if they are eligible for the Homestead tax Credit. That could mean five hundred dollars to the homeowner.
Nelson says he's heard from too many people who say special assessments put homeowners in a tight spot. He hopes his proposed legislation will soften the blow.
