Real ID generating real concerns

June 13, 2007 By WRN Contributor

The national Real ID system is supposed to be in place by next spring, but State Representative Louis Molepske (D-Stevens Point) says there are critical flaws that need to be addressed. He says there is no plan in place to help millions of Americans quickly replace their ID cards and federal officials still haven't established what rules the system will operate under. Also, Molepske says the state is being forced to cover the millions of dollars it will cost to implement the program.

State Representative Jeff Wood (R-Chippewa Falls) is worried about a national database of personal information that's created under Real ID. He says that opens the risk for millions of Americans to have their personal information easily stolen or used against them.

Molepske and Wood are sponsoring a bill that prevents the state from implementing Real ID, unless the system's funding and security issues are fixed.
