Report shows over two dozen violated contribution limits

June 27, 2007 By WRN Contributor

A new report from the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign shows 27 people violated the state's $10,000 limit on contributions to state political candidates and committees in 2006.  Executive Director Mike McCabe says the violators include a lobbyist, out of state donors, and individuals tied to major businesses and special interest groups.

Despite the violations, McCabe says the group is not planning to file any complaints.  He says that's because those big donors rarely face penalties from the State Elections Board, despite breaking the law.

Instead, McCabe says they'll wait for the new Government Accountability Board to take control of the process this fall.    He's hopeful the board will be more severe with individuals who exceed contribution limits.
