Assembly dems quietly work on budget

July 2, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Assembly republicans have been very vocal in what they will or will not do with their version of the state budget. What about the minority democrats??

Assembly minority leader Jim Kreuser (D-Kenosha) says democrats haven't been sitting around doing nothing. They've been meeting in smaller groups and in caucus talking about what he calls core budget issues. Education, health care and jobs.

But Kreuser is keeping his budget cards close to the vest until he sees what Assembly Speaker Mike Huebsch and the republicans come up with.

Kreuser says, in a way, he feels sorry for Huebsch because he has to deal with several extreme members of the party who are pushing for certain things in the budget. Kresuer calls it "the tail wagging the dog".

Kreuser says he and Huebsch talk often and while they disagree on issues they agree not to be disagreeable. Something different this year for Assembly leaders. Kresuer says that is a better atmosphere for compromise.

Still, he doesn't think a budget will come together quickly. But it will come together.
