Federal funds making Safe Routes to School

July 23, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Many Wisconsin students could soon have safer routes to schools.

The state will use $4 million in federal grant money to create a safe way for kids to walk or bike to school. That money will be used to install sidewalks, bike trails, and traffic calming. It will also help fund educational programs and traffic enforcement around schools.

Renee Callaway coordinates the Safe Routes to School program. She says it's intended to keep kids in Kindergarten through 8th grade active by having them bike or walk to school. Callaway says it will also reduce traffic around schools because fewer children would need to be dropped off.

Callaway says the money will help fund projects in 47 communities across the state. Most of the improvements will be made within two miles of schools.
