Kind continues push for fewer subsidies

July 20, 2007 By WRN Contributor

A Wisconsin Congressman says a proposed compromise on the new farm bill doesn't go far enough.

The US House Agriculture Committee this week voted to keep subsidies from going to farmers that earn over $1 million a year. Congressman Ron Kind (D-WI) says that's not real reform because far too many big operations would still qualify for government help under the plan. The bill lowers the threshold for help from the current $2.5 million, but Kind says the change is only cosmetic. The Wisconsin Democrat says it's a missed opportunity on the part of Congress.

Kind has been part of an effort to eliminate most subsidies for farmers. Instead, he wants to provide a funding safety net for them when commodity prices fall.

The Wisconsin Democrat says he will introduce an amendment that would further reduce subsidy programs.
