Lawmakers look to dump recycling tax credit

July 18, 2007 By WRN Contributor

An increasingly popular tax exemption for Wisconsin businesses may be coming to an end soon. A court decision created a loophole in the law that allows more companies to qualify for a property tax exemption for wastewater treatment.

As a result, Rich Eggleston of the Wisconsin Alliance of Cities says more businesses are getting a tax exemption for recycling. Those include large companies such as paper mills, plastic companies, and cheese processors. He says the exemption results in property tax burdens being shifted to homeowners.

The State Senate has already voted unanimously to close the loophole. The bill restricts which companies can qualify for a tax exemption on equipment to treat waste water.
