Legislation requires pharmacists to provide birth control

July 13, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Lawmakers are taking aim at pharmacists who refuse to fill prescriptions for birth control. Legislation from State Representative Christine Sinicki (D-Milwaukee) would require pharmacists to fill prescriptions for any legal form of birth control. The Milwaukee Democrat says protecting access to birth control is a critical issue across the state.

Sinicki says women shouldn't have to worry about a pharmacist's personal beliefs when they go to get a prescription filled. She says family planning is an essential right for women, especially those trying to balance a career and education.

The proposal is expected to face resistance in the state Assembly, which has already blocked other birth control legislation. Sinicki says she's committed to the fight and will keep pushing the issue if it doesn't get a hearing this session.
