Villanueva returns to lead Brewers to win

September 5, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Carlos Villanueva returned from a short stint at Class AAA Nashville to pitch the Brewers to a 5-3 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night.

Villanueva worked six innings allowing 1 run on 5 hits, walking only 2 and striking out 6 to pick up the win and improve to 7-3 on the season.  It gives the Brewers 4 wins in the last 5 games.

Francisco Cordero pitched the 9th to record his franchise record 40th save.  His 40 saves passes the previous record high of 39, set by Dan Kolb in 2004 and Derrick Turnbow in 2005.

Ryan Braun clubbed his 27th home run of the season in the first inning to give the Brewers a lead they would never relinquish.

The win pulled the Brewers to within 1/2 game of the division leading Cubs, who lost to the Dodgers at Wrigley Field last night.
