Man fights bear and lives to tell about it

October 18, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Strapped into his tree stand, bow in hand, Kevin Schultz was looking for a deer. But to his surprise four black bears appeared.

He thought they would just keep moving toward a cornfield but they stopped right under his tree.

Schultz started yelling and waving his hands thinking it would scare the off. But to his surprise, it scared one of the cubs into scampering up his tree, past the stand and onto a branch above. Then it started crying for mom.

The next thing Schultz knew, a three hundred pound mother black bear was at his side trying to paw, scratch and pull the "threat" away from her cub. Schultz is convinced the bear would have pulled him to the ground if he weren't strapped to the tree.

It happened in seconds but Schultz says he just started kicking the bear and hitting her with his bow. She finally pulled one of Schultz's boots off and possibly thinking she conquered the threat took the boot to the ground and went off with her cubs.

Schultz suffered some cuts and scratches. He says he'll hunt again but not in that spot.
