More competition for State Supreme Court seat

October 4, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Another hat thrown in the ring as we gear up for another State Supreme Court Justice race.

Saying Wisconsin deserves a fair, balanced and independent Supreme Court, Burnett County Circuit Judge Michael Gableman will challenge incumbent Justice Louis Butler for his seat on the bench.

Judge Gableman says he is not a politician or a partisan ideologue but he is surrounded by republican consultants and will likely get the backing of more conservative groups.

But the judge and former prosecutor says he's not interested in making law from the bench, just applying the law fairly and he thinks that message will reach across all party lines. He believes his experience and judicial philosophy is in stark contrast to Justice Butler's.

There was record campaign spending last year's supreme court election, Will this one be the same? Judge Gableman says he really doesn't know but he's confident there will be enough funding to run a successful campaign.

Sun Prairie attorney Charlie Schutze is also running so there will be a primary in February. The general election is next April.
