Safety first during gun deer hunt

November 17, 2007 By WRN Contributor

DNR officials are hoping for a safe season, as Wisconsin deer hunters head out today.

Last year, there were 10 accidents around the state and one person killed. Greg Matthews with the DNR says that's pretty safe, considering the number of hunters that are usually out during the first weekend of the gun deer hunt.

Matthews says the easiest way to avoid an accident is know where all members of your party are at all times. He says the majority of accidents that occur are the result of two members in the same party shooting each other or are self inflicted.

Five of the gunshot wounds from last year were self-inflicted, and the death occurred when a man driving deer was shot by another man in his hunting party.
