A plea deal for Jensen?

December 19, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen is hoping a plea deal can be worked out to avoid another trial for former Assembly Speaker Scott Jensen. The move comes after Jensen's the three felony convictions for illegal campaign activity were overturned by the state Appeals Court last month.

Jay Heck of Wisconsin Common Cause says it's not clear if Jensen wants to negotiate a deal. Heck says if Jensen holds tough and says he didn't do anything wrong, then there will be another trial. However, he thinks the outcome would be the same.

Jensen was the only one of five former legislative leaders convicted in the Capitol caucus scandal to go to trial. The others were convicted after entering plea agreements. Jensen's lawyer says no negotiations are taking place.
