Enlisting the shovel brigade

December 29, 2007 By WRN Contributor

A Milwaukee alderman proposes an old fashioned solution to snow removal. Alderman Bob Bauman wants to pay shovelers to clear areas that sometimes don't get cleared of snow for days: crosswalks, wheelchair ramps and bus stops.

Bauman would have the city contract the snow shovelers, much as it contracts to have grass mowed, to have those areas cleared within 24 hours of snowfalls. Bauman says front end loaders don't do a good job of clearing curb cuts, and in many neighborhoods it now takes days for city crews to get the job done.

Bauman's proposal, with a projected annual cost of $264,000, will be the subject a public hearing next week.
