Vandals release cougars from Manitowoc zoo

December 27, 2007 By WRN Contributor

Officials in Manitowoc have recaptured two cougars that escaped from the Lincoln Park Zoo.

Police believe vandals released the two cougars sometime overnight, after cutting through a chain-link fence. One of the animals was tracked down earlier this morning by officers, who tranquilized it. The other cougar was found in the park, and was safely returned to the zoo. No injuries were reported.

Manitowoc Mayor Kevin Crawford thanked officials for their quick response to the incident. He also questioned the motive for the action, which comes just days after an escaped tiger in California killed one person and mauled two other zoo visitors. Crawford says anyone who released the animals thinking they were better off in the wild was mistaken.
