Hot line would target government waste

January 12, 2008 By WRN Contributor

It could soon be easier to report government waste or fraud. Proposed legislation at the Capitol would set up a waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement hotline within the Legislative Audit Bureau. State Representative Steve Wieckert (R-Appleton), a sponsor of the bill, says it would be one more tool that concerned citizens and state employees could use to make sure state tax dollars are being used properly.

The Audit Bureau would follow up on calls to the hot line or report them to the agency facing a complaint. Wieckert says many people currently don't know where to turn. He says the hot line would give them a "one stop shop" for reporting information.

The state Senate already approved the bill and it's currently awaiting action in an Assembly committee.
