A new report on global warming outlines specific plans for the state to adopt for a cleaner future.
It's called a " Blueprint for Action on Global Warming in Wisconsin ." Director of Wisconsin Environment Dan Kohler says given the magnitude of the threat of global warming to the environment, it's time to get serious on solutions.
"Fortunately Wisconsin is uniquely positioned to address global warming and benefit by harvesting more homegrown clean energy from wind and biofuels and by improving efficiency measures to save energy and to save consumers money."
Kohler says his 75-page report is consistent with scientists' recommendations on how to prevent the worst impacts of the problem.
"A Blueprint For Action outlines a plan Wisconsin can use to reduce carbon emissions — the main greenhouse gas — to 1990 levels by 2020. A 30% reduction from projected levels."
Kohler explains the most critical aspects of the plan, which would establish a cap on emissions and use a credit trade program, promote renewable energy, establish a moratorium on new coal-fired power plants, reduce transportation emissions, and reduce energy consumption.
Wisconsin Environment is calling on the state legislature to adopt a bill being kicked around in legislative committees, called the Wisconsin Safe Climate Act ( SB81 / AB157 ).
