Zaugg and Vetter earn women's WCHA honors

January 30, 2008 By WRN Contributor

After leading the No. 5 Wisconsin women's hockey team to a series sweep of No. 9 St. Cloud State last weekend at the Kohl Center, senior forward Jinelle Zaugg and junior goalie Jessie Vetter each earned WCHA Player of the Week honors.

Zaugg was named the WCHA Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three goals and adding an assist against the Huskies.  Last Friday, Zaugg helped UW open up a 3-0 lead with her 11th goal of the season midway through the second period.

The following afternoon, the Eagle River, Wis., native matched her best performance of the season with two goals, including the game-winner, as well as an assist to lead the Badgers to their eighth straight victory.

For the season, Zaugg leads the UW in goals (13) and power-play goals (six) and ranks second on the team in points (24).  After going seven games without a goal, Zaugg has scored in each of the past four games and is six away from the UW career record of 84 held by Meghan Hunter.

For the second consecutive week, Vetter was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week.  The Cottage Grove, Wis., native held St. Cloud to just one goal on 43 shots and posted five shutout periods during the weekend.

Vetter is now 17-6-1 on the 2007-08 season and has allowed just six goals in her last seven games.  She is tied for the national lead with 8 shutouts this season and ranks fourth with a goals-against average of 1.25 while playing the second most minutes in the country.
