A U.S Senator from Wisconsin wants to put an end to mortgage foreclosure scams.
Home foreclosure rates nationwide continue to climb, and Senator Herb Kohl (D-WI) says criminals are trying to take advantage of those in danger of losing their homes. Many homeowners in trouble are being approached by people offering to help them fix their financial problems, if they just sign over their homes. But instead of getting the fix they need, the criminals sell the home out from under them.
Kohl says there are no federal laws in place to directly address this type of scam right now. He's working on legislation at the federal level that would give prosecutors the power to charge the scammers, put them in prison, and possibly return the home to the original owner.
Several states have already adopted similar types of legislation.
