There's a push at the Capitol to recognize the importance of cheese to Wisconsin.
Wisconsin is well known for its cheese, but the food is not directly named among the state's symbols. State Senator Jim Sullivan (D-Wauwatosa) is sponsoring a bill to make cheese Wisconsin's official state snack food. He says it's an opportunity for the state to recognize a product that's very important to its residents.
Sullivan says the idea came from a group of 4th graders in his district, who made a strong case for the bill. He says they prepared a presentation on the history of cheese making to the state and its impact on Wisconsin. They then asked the Wauwatosa Democrat if he would help move the measure forward.
Sullivan admits that, with just a few days left in the legislative session, the bill is not expected to pass. However, he thinks introducing the measure was important to help show kids they can get involved in the process. Sullivan says he'd be happy to bring the bill back next session for the students.
