Big money for a big science talent

March 10, 2008 By WRN Contributor

A teen from Appleton is among 40 students in Washington DC who is gunning for a $100,000 scholarship. Matt Wage is a finalist at the Intel Science Talent Search (STS). The Appleton High School East student says he got there by submitting a paper on modular forms which are mathematical equations. Wage is specifically studying Lehmer's Conjecture in which he says, "I didn't solve it, I'd be famous if I did."

The 17 year old has been through a grueling interview and presentation process in the nation's capitol. The high school athlete admits he likes the competition of it all. Although he thinks it's unlikely he'll win the top prize, he's like to use the money to go to an Ivy League school or head to Madison, depending on where he gets accepted.

The judges are in meetings Monday and are expected to announce the winner Tuesday at a banquet.
