Marquette advances in NCAA's for first time since 2003

March 20, 2008 By WRN Contributor

After opening round losses each of the last two years, the Marquette Golden Eagles knocked off Kentucky 74-66 to advance into the second round of the tournament on Saturday.

Wes Matthews hit 8-straight free throws in the closing minute to help the Golden Eagles pick up their first tournament win since the 2003 season when they advanced to the Final Four.

For Kentucky, it's their first opening round loss since the 1987 season.  Joe Crawford led all scorers with 35 for the Wildcats.  Jerel McNeal had 20 to lead Marquette.

Marquette plays next on Saturday and will take on the winner of the Stanford / Cornell game.
