Marquette wins first NCAA Tournament game since 2003

March 21, 2008 By WRN Contributor

The last time Marquette won an NCAA Tournament game was 2003.  They reached the Final Four that year.

Yesterday the Golden Eagles, after losing in the opening round in each of the last two years, beat Kentucky yesterday 74-66 in Anaheim.

Jerel McNeal scored a team-high 20 points and Wesley Matthews hit 8-straight free throws in the final minute to lead the 6th seeded Golden Eagles to the win.  Lazar Hayward also chipped in with 16 points and 7 rebounds.

It sets up a date with Stanford in 2nd round.  Stanford advanced with a 77-53 win over Cornell.
