New licensure for electricians

March 18, 2008 By WRN Contributor

Electricians in Wisconsin must get licensed under a new law, which creates a statewide licensing standard to protect consumers. Beata Kalies with the Wisconsin Federation of Cooperatives says some consumers have hired electricians who aren't qualified to do the work. The law requires beginning electricians to register with the state commerce department. It also requires journeymen and master electricians to pass a test before they get the license. The bill includes exemptions for some electricians, like plumbers and do-it-yourself homeowners.
