Snowmobiling while intoxicated

March 21, 2008 By WRN Contributor

Drunk snowmobiling may eventually count against your driving record. Study is being given as to whether driving drunk on a snowmobile should impact your drivers license. The DNR's Gary Eddy says information is being put together for the governor's snowmobile council, looking at the snowmobile fatality rate and what can be done to reduce it. One thing information is being collected on is how an operating while intoxicated tie in with a driver's license would work for snowmobiling. Eddy says the concept seems to have helped in Michigan and Minnesota, where snowmobiling fatality rates are lower than in Wisconsin.

Eddy says the majority of riders are very responsible, but a small minority do cause problems by drinking and riding. Eddy says of 25 fatal snowmobile crashes so far this winter, at least 16 were alcohol involved.
