It's latest in a wave of robberies near Marquette University. Marquette spokeswoman Brigid Miller says just after midnight Friday, the school's public safety officers nabbed five suspects within minutes of an armed robbery that took place near campus. She says the surveillance cameras located in the area were one of the keys in apprehending them. The victim was a 22-year-old male student.
Marquette students have been the victims of several robberies in the past two weeks, including a kidnapping of two students forced to withdraw money from an ATM.
"Milwaukee Police tell us that none of these incidents are related to each other and they are doing everything they can to respond as quickly as possible," says Miller. She adds the recent incidents of robbery are "rare."
She says the university has a well coordinated relationship to assist MPD and vice versa. In addition to MU's 24-hour public safety officers patrolling, they also have surveillance cameras, free shuttles and more than 200 blue light phones to assist students in need.
