Be bear aware

April 22, 2008 By WRN Contributor

It's the time of year when bears are on the move in Wisconsin. Bear problems are common in the spring, as the animals are hungry after their long winter sleep. The DNR's Mike Zeckmeister says a bear can lose 35% of its body weight over the winter, so the first thing they have on their minds is to eat something. Zeckmeister notes bears have a keen sense of smell, so he advises removing potential food sources, otherwise bears will keep coming back, and you do not want bears to learn people equal food. Zeckmeister says it is very stressful for the animal if a bear has to be relocated, and they will likely be entering a new bear's territory. He says the transported bear may not survive.
