Wisconsin men's basketball coach Bo Ryan, who just completed his seventh season at UW and led the Badgers to a school record 31 wins this year, has been named the Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year. The award is named after longtime Mount Saint Mary's head coach Jim Phelen.
Ryan also finished as runner-up in its National Coach of the Year balloting.
Ryan guided the Badgers to a 31-5 record in 2007-08, winning both the Big Ten regular season title and the Big Ten Tournament title. He guided his Badgers to the "Sweet 16" before bowing out of the NCAA Tournament.
Ryan has coached the Badgers to seven consecutive NCAA Tournament berths, including three "Sweet 16's" and an "Elite Eight". Wisconsin has won three Big Ten regular season and two tournament crowns under Ryan's direction.
The Badgers are 61-11 over the past two seasons, the fifth-best mark in the nation.
