The Edgerton School Board is standing behind the high school principal's decision to allow a Spanish language reading of the Pledge of Allegiance, while conceding that the the matter will be handled somewhat differently in the future. Principal Jim Halberg agreed that if the pledge is said in Spanish in the future, it also will be said in English either before or after.
The debate began in March when a Spanish class read the daily Pledge of Allegiance in Spanish , which angered some local veterans. Janesville Gazette reporter Stacy Vogel covered the meeting, and said most speakers who addressed the issue were veterans, with six opposed to the version in Spanish, and four in favor.
