Old UW murder revisited

April 28, 2008 By WRN Contributor

Ralph Armstrong was convicted nearly three decades ago of raping and killing UW-Madison student Charise Kamps in her downtown apartment.  But now defense attorneys claim Armstrong's brother, Steve, confessed to the murder in 1994 or 1995.

During his trial in 1981, Ralph Armstrong testified that on the night of the murder, he had done cocaine with his girlfriend Jane May and Kamps. He also claimed he learned of Kamps' death from his girlfriend later that night.

Steve Armstrong has since died and his body has been cremated.  The Supreme Court has ordered a new trial for Ralph Armstrong, based on DNA evidence.
