New look at old UW murder

May 27, 2008 By WRN Contributor

News reports lately have talked about three recent unsolved murders in Madison with ties to the area around the University of Wisconsin, but a decades-old murder of a student on campus is still unsolved. Christine Rothschild was found stabbed to death 40 years ago this week.

Linda Schulko, a friend of Rothschild, says she's impacted worse as the years go on.

"You learn to grieve longer and deeper in different ways because you can't give back to the person who you've lost."

Schulko is determined to find the killer. She recently shared information with UW-Madison Police about a "person of interest", a former university employee who had a reputation as an oddball.

Assistant University Police Chief Dale Burke says a group of current and retired detectives are again reviewing all the evidence in the case. If investigators find something they believe to be worthwhile, they submit it to the crime lab. Burke says a ceremony Monday at UW-Madison to remember Rothschild's life may provide that "spark" needed for the investigation.
