No belts, passenger steering, teen driver dies

May 8, 2008 By WRN Contributor

The death of a Chippewa Falls area teen may hold a lesson for young drivers. The Chippewa County Sheriff's Department says 16 year-old Carrie Gjelhaug of the Town of Tilden was killed when the car she was driving went out of control and rolled over in a ditch, ejecting her. According to the accident report, Gjelhaug asked one of her passengers to take the wheel while she removed a necklace, shortly before the car went out of control. The teens were not wearing seatbelts. Two other teens were injured in the crash, which occurred Wednesday afternoon just north of Chippewa Falls. Chippewa Falls High School principal Jim Sauter says news of Gjelhaug's death has been devastating to students and staff.
